1) Can a PA be supervised by an out-of-state physician?

2) Can a PA student graduate who has passed their board exams practice medicine while waiting for their license to be sent, as long as a practice agreement and a supervising physician is in place?

No, a PA can't practice medicine in California unless they have a current license issued by the PAB.

*If the PA is being employed for non-medicine-related work, such as scribing or maintaining the operations of an office, they may be employed. However, they cannot diagnose or treat patients unless they have a license.

3) Is it legally permissible for a dermatologist to supervise PAs in a family practice setting in California?

Yes. The physician scope is unrelated and doesn’t impact their PAs’ practice scope (and vice versa). The only definition outlined by SB 697 defining the types of physicians who may supervise is as follows:

“Supervising physician” or “supervising physician and surgeon” means a physician and surgeon licensed by the Medical Board of California or by the Osteopathic Medical Board of California who supervises one or more physician assistants, who possesses a current valid license to practice medicine, and who is not currently on disciplinary probation prohibiting the employment or supervision of a physician assistant.”

So any specialty physician may supervise a primary care/family practice PA or any specialty PA.

4) What percentage of my patients’ medical charts/records must be co-signed by a physician, as determined by the State and the Physician Assistant Board?

5) How many hours of Category 1 CME am I required to complete to renew my state license?

The PAB requires 50 hours of Category 1 CME every two years.

PAB website: “In order to ensure continuing competence of a licensed physician assistant, a licensee must complete a minimum of fifty (50) hours of approved continuing medical education (CME) during each two (2) year renewal period immediately preceding the expiration of the license (Section 1399.615 of Title 16, California Code of Regulations).
