Barrett’s Esophagus, Esophageal Adenocarcinoma, and the Importance of Screening

Barrett's esophagus (BE) is characterized by the conversion of the normal esophageal squamous epithelium into columnar epithelium in the tubular esophagus. Dr. DeGuzman's presentation will explain the symptoms, disease progression, incidence, risk factors and the importance of screening at risk populations.

After this lecture, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the symptoms and prevalence of Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and BE and understand the role of acid reflux in the disease progression
  • Identify common risk factors for developing BE and esophageal cancer and understand the progression from intestinal metaplasia to non-dysplastic BE, to BE with dysplasia, to cancer
  • Understand the screening options for BE and the treatment options for BE and early esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) as well as the role of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs)

Following the Category I CME presentation, Dr. DeGuzman will introduce Lucid Diagnostics' EsoGuard esophageal DNA test. BE is a premalignant condition of the distal esophagus that increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Unfortunately, screening for BE currently requires endoscopy, an invasive and expensive procedure, and thus, it is not routinely performed. But with the EsoGuard esophageal DNA test, PAs can detect esophageal pre-cancer with over 90% sensitivity and specificity in a office environment without endoscopy.
