Description:
Understand the role of new FDA-approved, highly accurate laboratory-based HSV antibody test (HerpeSelect 1 and 2) in the diagnosis of herpes simplex virus infection (HSV).
Describe recent changes in HSV-1 and HSV–2 incidence and prevalence and implications for clinical practice.
Explain the common presentations of genital HSV infection including:
1- “classic” painful vesiculopapular and ulcerative disease
2- atypical presentation – mostly lower genital tract inflammatory condition soften unrecognized as due to HSV infection
3- asymptomatic infection including asymptomatic viral shedding
Describe pharmacologic management of genital HSV infection – initial episodic and suppressive approaches to treatment – including approaches to successfully addressing patient and system barriers to successful therapy. Describe approaches to significantly reduce HSV-2 transmission including daily suppressive therapy and the use of barriers.
Understand proposed prenatal screening algorithms for HSV-2/HSV-1
