In this presentation, the speaker will give an overview of the evaluation and treatment of the acute burn patient. The content is geared toward the physician assistant in the primary care setting who may be the initial provider rendering care for the acute burn patient. At the conclusion of the presentation, the providers in attendance should be able to:
1. Distinguish between a first, second and third degree burn
2. Calculate the total body surface area of a burn using the rule of nines
3. Recognize which patients meet criteria for transfer or referral to a burn center
4. Understand the importance of effective wound care for burns
5. Understand the physiologic effects (locally and systemically) of a burn injury
6. Understand the importance of adequate fluid resuscitation
7. Recognize the multi-discipline approach to burn care
8. Understand the role of surgical intervention in the acute burn and the different modalities used to close the burn wound
