Learning Objectives:

Review prevalence of chronic heart failure in the African American population, specifically that it 1) occurs at an earlier age, 2) associated with more advanced left ventricular dysfunction, 3) more likely to be associated with hypertensive heart disease, 4) higher rates of hospitalization and 5) higher mortality rates.
Discuss the definition, epidemiology, etiology and pathophysiology of heart failure in the African American population. Using evidence based medicine and current guidelines, discuss the current and new pharmacological approaches to the treatment of heart failure.
