Learning Objectives:

  • Develop a working knowledge of the negative and positive aspects of the pre-participation exam (PPE)
  • Develop a consistent format for delivering the PPE
  • Identify the important historical and physical exam elements of the PPE
  • List the AHA 12-point recommendations for the PPE
  • Understand the clinically relevant and preexisting abnormalities associated with sports participation
  • Describe the relevant laboratory testing guidelines for the PPE
  • Define the guidelines for medical clearance for participation in competitive sports
  • State the anticipatory guidance issues for appropriate and safe sports participation
  • Identify clinically relevant and preexisting abnormalities significant to the athlete
